Smith’s Wood
The Wildlife Ways project in Smith’s Wood will see the planting of almost 100 cherry, oak, lime and apple trees as well as 70,000 wildflower bulbs in late 2019. Almost 50,000 square metres of wildflower seed and turf will also be laid.
These works form part of a borough-wide project which is designed to make Solihull greener. Part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund, the project will open up and improve existing routes, allowing wildlife to flourish and helping people to walk and cycle across the borough.
Work has finished on Route O, which included signposting from the junction of Water Orton Road and Marlborough Road to where it meets with West Avenue, then along West Avenue to Hurst Lane North. From Hurst Lane North the footway has been upgraded along Green Lane up to the parallel crossing opposite St. Clements Church. An additional parallel crossing point has been installed on Hurst Lane North.
Along Chester Road we have been carrying out wildflower seeding on several of the verges and central reservations. More trees have also been added with wildflower turf laid in select locations.
We have already carried out wildflower seeding along verges between Auckland Drive and the A452. At Auckland Drive there is also a bulb mix of crocuses and snowdrops. Some trees are being planted in this area and along selected verges we have laid down wildflower turf.
